Midwest Legends Episode #36: Tom Kelly Pt. 2 – Managing the Twins, Puckett, and The '87 World Series Midwest Legends

Welcome back to the Midwest Legends Podcast for Tom Kelly Pt. 2! This week, Tom takes Russell through his journey of becoming a renowned baseball manager. Although Tom claims he was just thinking about how “not to get fired,” throughout his first managing stint with the Twins in ’87, it’s clear there’s much more genius in his management style then he lets on. Enough genius to lead to the Twins winning it all that very season!  Tune in to hear from Tom about why he prioritizes defense, his iconic conversation with Jack Morris before the 10thinning, a surprising story about Kirby Puckett, and much more!

About the host

Russell Nicolet, host of Midwest Legends

Russell Nicolet has deep Midwest roots and never found a good reason to leave. He’s the founding attorney at Nicolet Law, which means a lot of people in the region know his face from a billboard before they ever hear his voice.

Midwest Legends is the other side of that. Every week he sits down with somebody worth listening to, and then mostly gets out of the way while they talk.

He’d rather ask the questions than answer them, which is why this is the shortest section on the site.

Got a story? Call it in.

Tell it like you’d tell it around the campfire. The best ones make the show.
